We get used to looking at waste as a problem. Households around the world produce a huge amount of waste. Pollution is reaching enormous proportions. The sight of a full trash can arouse feelings of despair in most people. For a long time, incinerators have been the only solution for the hordes of waste we produce.

 

Waste is an asset: a sentence that few still believe. This is because so far we have only been able to recover plastic granules from PET bottles, glass, paper and metals from waste. Therefore, most plastics end up in a junkyard. Alternatively, these plastics are used as a fuel, which is certainly out of place in the current fight against greenhouse gas emissions. Europe is addressing this by banning disposable plastic products. Practical plastic straws are replaced by unpleasant paper "tubes".

 

However, if plastics are made from oil, can oil also be made from plastics?
